Charles Frazier Stanley, an American Baptist pastor and author, was born on September 25, 1932, and passed away on April 18, 2023.

He served as the senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta for nearly five decades and was granted emeritus status in 2020.

Stanley established In Touch Ministries, where he served as the president and his sermons were widely broadcasted on television and radio.

He also had the honor of being elected as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention for two consecutive one-year terms from 1984 to 1986.

Charles Stanley devoted his life to disseminating the message of the gospel.

His zeal for sharing the Word of God led him to become a pastor at the age of 14, and he continued to serve in this capacity for almost half a century at the First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Stanley founded In Touch Ministries, which enabled him to disseminate his sermons and teachings through various media outlets.

His program, The Chapel Hour, was launched in 1972, and in 1977, In Touch Ministries was established with the mission of leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and strengthening local churches.

The Christian Broadcasting Network began airing In Touch in 1978, and since then, the show has been translated into 50 languages.

In the United States, it is broadcast on approximately 500 radio stations, 300 television stations, and several satellite networks.

The ministry also publishes In Touch magazine and provides a website for its followers to access its teachings and resources.

Charles Stanley’s messages addressed a wide range of topics, including finances, parenting, personal crises, emotional matters, relationships, and Protestantism.

He was known for his unwavering belief in the inerrancy of the Bible, which was strongly reflected in his teaching.

Despite encountering personal struggles in his own life, including a controversial divorce from his wife of over 40 years, Anna J. Stanley.

Stanley’s marriage to Anna J. Stanley, his wife of over 40 years, ended in divorce. They legally separated before Anna filed for divorce in 1993, and again in 1995.

The progeny of Charles Stanley, Becky and Andy, resulted from the marriage.

The final divorce decree was signed by a judge in 2000.

The Southern Baptist Convention was briefly embroiled in controversy over the divorce, complicated by reports that Stanley had previously said he would resign as a pastor if he were to get divorced.

Despite this, Stanley’s church members overwhelmingly voted to keep him on as pastor as long as he did not remarry.

Charles Stanley remained devoted to his ministry and continued to inspire and encourage his followers until his passing at the age of 90.

His influence on the Southern Baptist Convention and his dedication to Christian service will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.

Despite their distinct paths in life, the children of Charles Stanley share a strong bond and continue to support each other in their personal and professional pursuits.
