Jaime Brugada Valdez, also known as Wealth Suede, was 22 years old at the time of his fatal stabbing.
Valdez, who had already pleaded guilty, was serving a two-year sentence concurrently with his Riverside convictions for a gun charge in Los Angeles County.
On Tuesday, just before 10 PM, prison officials discovered Wealth Suede unconscious in the shower area at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries.
While the police did not disclose the specifics of his injuries, they confirmed that Valdez’s death was being investigated as a homicide, and movement within the prison was restricted to aid the inquiry.
Nicholas Rosenberg, Valdez’s lawyer, revealed to the Los Angeles Times that his client had been stabbed in the neck.
Suede was signed by Atlantic Records in 2021, and his most recent album was released in September, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
An anonymous prisoner indicated that Valdez’s demise took place in a part of the prison mostly occupied by general population inmates, questioning why a prominent rapper like Wealth Suede was not held in a more secure section of the facility.
His tragic end serves as a stark reminder for prison facilities to enhance their security measures.
