Madeira City Schools remained closed on Tuesday following Flanagan’s unforeseen passing on Monday night, with the closure being described as a non-school safety emergency. 

The day off was intended to allow students, staff, and families to cope with the loss. 

Prior to joining Madeira, Flanagan served as the principal of Ayer Elementary and as an assistant principal at Mercer Elementary in the Forest Hills School District. 

Forest Hills Superintendent Larry Hook stated in a release that Flanagan had a positive impact on many students and staff during his time with the district.

Flanagan, who spent half of his 50 years serving local students, was a beloved figure in the community. 

He was known for his commitment to his students, as evidenced by his 2013 rooftop campout to celebrate his students raising $31,000 for the school and his rapid response to a plane crash near his school in 2019. 

Flanagan began his career as a teacher in the Finneytown Local School District in 1998. He later became an assistant principal in the Forest Hills Local School District. 

In 2013, he spent a night on the roof of Ayer Elementary to celebrate his students’ fundraising efforts. 

He commenced his teaching career in the Finneytown Local School District in 1998. He subsequently held the position of an assistant principal in the Forest Hills Local School District before being appointed as principal of Ayer Elementary. 

He has been serving as principal of Madeira Elementary since 2016.

The news of his passing has left the staff at Ayer Elementary in disbelief, as stated by Jonathan Kollmann, the pastor at Anderson Hills Church. 

He resided in Madeira with his wife Danielle, and their four children.
