Chuck Schumer’s parents shared a close bond. The passing of Abraham Schumer, Senator Chuck Schumer’s father, occurred on Long Island due to complications from heart surgery, Wednesday, at the age of 98.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Senator Schumer reflected on his father, a member of the “greatest generation,” for his work ethic and dedication.

He was an epitome of the greatest generation in many ways. He diligently carried out his work, regardless of the challenges, and refrained from complaints.

Who is Chuck Schumer?

Charles Ellis Schumer, the respected senior senator from New York, took his first breath on November 23, 1950.

Since 1999, he has efficiently represented the interests of his constituents in this role. Schumer, a Democratic senator, has been at the helm of the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017 and the Senate Majority since 2021.

In 2023, he will become the longest-serving New York senator, surpassing Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Jacob K. Javits.

Prior to his time in the Senate, Schumer served three terms in the NYS Assembly from 1975 to 1980 and then in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1999. In 1998, he defeated three-term Republican Al D’Amato.

Schumer has played a crucial role as the Senate Minority Leader in passing various acts, including the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and more.

Additionally, he facilitated the confirmation of a record number of federal judges during his first two years as the majority leader.

On November 23, 1950, Schumer came into the world as the son of Selma and Abraham Schumer in Midwood, Brooklyn.

His mother was a homemaker, while his father possessed an exterminating business. He is a Jewish second cousin once removed of Amy Schumer, a comedian.

His family lineage can be traced back to the Galician village of Chortkiv in what is now western Ukraine.

Schumer attended public schools in Brooklyn, achieved a perfect SAT score, and became the valedictorian of his James Madison High School class. On the game show, It’s Academic. 

He represented Madison High School before attending Harvard University.

Although initially studying chemistry and social studies, he later changed his major after contributing to Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 presidential campaign. 

Schumer pursued his studies at Harvard Law School and obtained his Juris Doctor with honors in 1974. After graduating with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, he was admitted to the New York bar in the early 1970s, but opted for politics over a legal career.

Born in 1923, Abraham Schumer spent his formative years in Utica, New York. After serving as a radar operator in the Pacific during World War II, he took over his family’s pest control business in Brooklyn.

During his childhood, Schumer vividly recalls his father pacing the floors of their family home on Monday mornings, displaying palpable anxiety about going to work.

Abraham and his wife Selma had three children, including their eldest son, Senator Schumer.

The senator recently shared the details of his birth during a Thanksgiving Day news conference in 1950.

What did Chuck Schumer do for a living? Schumer ran for and won a New York State Assembly seat in 1974, following the footsteps of his political hero, Congressman Stephen Solarz. 

Schumer served in the New York legislature for three terms (181st, 182nd, and 183rd) from 1975 to 1981. He never placed second in an election.

Democrat Elizabeth Holtzman of New York’s 16th congressional district was nominated to succeed Republican Jacob Javits in the Senate that year. 

Schumer won Holtzman’s House seat. He represented sections of Brooklyn and Queens as the 16th from 1981 to 1983. 

The 10th from 1983 to 1993, and the 9th since 1993. He was re-elected eight times. Redistricting in 1982 pitted Schumer against Solarz, but Solarz triumphed.

Schumer “began courting” Wall Street in advance, seeking campaign donations from the city’s top law firms and banks. I told them my reapportionment fight would be tough. He told AP, “If I were to have any hope of being re-elected, I needed some help.”

Schumer introduced the Religious Freedom Restoration Act on March 11, 1993. Schumer chaired the House probe into the 1995 Waco siege as one of four Democrats defending the Clinton administration. He was on the House Judiciary Committee.

In January 2019, Schumer and 39 other senators presented the Background Check Expansion Act to require background checks for firearm purchases, sales, and transfers, regardless of licensing status. 

The bill exempted law enforcement officer transfers, temporary firearm loans for hunting or sporting activities, presents to immediate family members, inheritance transfers, and self-defense handgun loans from the background check requirement.
