It was a sorrowful event for his acquaintances and relatives, particularly his niece Chrystal Evans, with whom he had a strong bond.
In July 1974, Mike met Helena Jefferson and they tied the knot on January 10th, 1976; her demise from breast cancer in 2002 preceded his own passing from throat cancer just four years later.
At the time of his premature death, Mike resided in Twentynine Palms, CA at his mother’s place.

Michael Jonas Evans was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, on November 3rd, 1949. His mother, Annie Sue Evans, was a teacher, while his father Theodore Evans Sr. worked as a dentist.
Prior to pursuing an acting career, he attended Los Angeles City College to hone his skills in the craft. He achieved success with his enduring portrayal as Lionel Jefferson in ‘All in the Family‘ and its spinoff show ‘The Jeffersons‘.
After portraying Lionel Jefferson for four years, he took a break from the character before resuming it from 1979 to 1981.
Throughout his career, Michael also made minor appearances on various other shows such as ‘Love, American Style‘, ‘The Streets of San Francisco‘, and the 1976 TV miniseries ‘Rich Man, Poor Man‘.
His final appearance was in a 2000 “Walker, Texas Ranger” episode. He had recently ventured into real estate investments in Southern California.
