Walmarts Shopping Cart Charges – The Truth Behind The Rumor

  • From February 1, Walmart will require a dollar deposit to use their carts.
  • There is no proof that Walmart outlets in the U.S. will embrace this policy in the near future.
  • This form of deposit system is more frequently employed in Europe and Canada compared to the U.S.

A TikTok user recently shared a video alleging that Walmarts charge $1 for using shopping carts.

The video displayed a cart equipped with a deposit system, where customers must insert a coin to release the cart from its corral, and the money would be refunded upon returning the cart.

The video gained popularity on Facebook, with users reposting it publicly.

However, upon contacting Walmart’s corporate communications team, it was disclosed that the video was filmed in a Walmart store in Canada, where the deposit system is a common practice among retailers.

There is no proof that Walmart outlets in the U.S. will adopt this practice in the near future.

An additional TikTok video from a different user depicted the deposit system in an American Walmart store.

This form of deposit system is more frequently used in Europe and Canada compared to the U.S. Some stores in the U.S. have started using this system, such as Aldi, which originated in Germany and currently operates more than 2,200 locations in the U.S.

Aldi asserts that the deposit saves customers money by reducing the necessity for additional staff to gather grocery carts.

In conclusion, the rumors about Walmart implementing a charge for using shopping carts need to be more precise for Walmart stores in the U.S.

The deposit system is more frequently used in Europe and Canada, and some stores in the U.S. have adopted it, but it has yet to be widespread in the country.
