A Life in Europe

Tina Turner’s infatuation with Europe commenced in the late 1970s when she embarked on a solo career that would propel her to international stardom.

In an enlightening interview with the late Larry King, Tina candidly expounded on her choice to leave America, citing two compelling reasons: her music and her affection for her partner, Erwin Bach.

However, soon after her wedding, Tina relocated. So where did Tina Turner live after marrying Erwin?

The Journey to Switzerland

In 1995, Tina Turner and Erwin Bach settled in Switzerland, specifically in the Zurich suburb of Kusnacht.

Tina’s partner, a German-born record producer, had shifted there to oversee a company. Tina saw this as the ideal opportunity to fulfill her longstanding desire to experience the allure of Switzerland.

The tranquil surroundings and the opportunity to be with her beloved partner made Switzerland an appealing choice for Tina.

Switzerland quickly became Tina Turner’s refuge, where she felt genuinely at home. She embraced Swiss culture, mastered the language, and even secured Swiss citizenship.

In a 2013 interview, Tina conveyed her profound contentment in Switzerland: “I cannot imagine a better place to live.”

The serene atmosphere, adherence to regulations, and the privacy provided to her were significant aspects that contributed to her happiness.

Within Switzerland, Tina and Erwin resided in the splendid Chateau Algonquin. While Tina initially desired a castle, she recognized its grandeur and opted for a residence that still provided her with a sense of ownership.

Why did Tina relocate from the US?

Tina Turner’s departure from the United States was not a disavowal of her homeland. Despite her success abroad, Tina made it clear that she maintained her ties to the U.S., fulfilling her tax obligations and honoring her family connections.

However, the allure of greater opportunities and the overwhelming support she received from her European fans rendered her success abroad undeniable.

Tina highlighted the marked contrast between her American and European acclaim during her interview with Larry King.

While she acknowledged her status as a superstar in America, she revealed that her popularity equaled that of celebrated artists such as Madonna and the Rolling Stones in Europe.

The resounding reception of her album “Private Dancer” in England marked a turning point in her career, validating her decision to explore new horizons.
