Alvin Bragg, a native of New York State, currently holds the position of the New York County District Attorney.

Bragg attended Trinity School before enrolling at Harvard College. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Government in 1995 before earning his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
During his time at law school, he served as an editor for the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review. In June 2019, Bragg launched his campaign for the New York County District Attorney position, which was being vacated by Cyrus Vance Jr.
He was elected to the position on November 2, 2021, defeating Republican Thomas Kenniff in the general election. Bragg officially assumed the office on January 1, 2022, becoming the first African American to hold this position.
Just three days into his term, on January 4, 2022, Bragg announced that his office would no longer prosecute low-level offenses, including fare evasion, resisting arrest, pr*stitution, and misdemeanors involving cannabis unless they were accompanied by a felony charge.
In February 2022, two of the lead prosecutors in the New York County District Attorney’s investigation of former President Donald Trump and his enterprises, Carey R. Dunne and Mark F. Pomerantz, stepped down after Bragg expressed uncertainty about pursuing a case against Trump.
However, in November 2022, The New York Times reported that the district attorney’s office had renewed its criminal investigation into Trump’s alleged “hush-money payment to a p*rn star.”
