Why Has Brian Flores Sued The NFL And Three Teams?

Brian Flores has recently taken legal action against the NFL and three of its franchises for racial bias. He has been appointed as the senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He has dedicated his entire career to the NFL. He has been involved in coaching American football and is currently the head coach of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League.

Brian Francisco Flores

On February 24, 1981, in New York City, USA, Brian Francisco Flores was born to Honduran parents who raised him in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City.

Brian Flores is the offspring of Mexican immigrants. His father, born in Durango, Mexico, and his mother, a first-generation immigrant from Jalisco, Mexico.

Flores initiated his football journey as a linebacker for Boston College from 1999 to 2002 after completing Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn. He was incapable of playing in the NFL due to an injury.

However, Flores developed his career with the New York Giants and the New York Mets as his preferred sports teams.

Life Of Brian Flores

Flores’ parents immigrated to the United States in the 1970s to offer a better life for Flores, his siblings, and their entire family.

His parents, uncles, and aunts spent significant time in places where they may not have had substantial financial wealth, but they were certainly rich in love.

Flores’ fundamental values were instilled in him at a young age, benefiting him throughout his life, from Poly Prep in Brooklyn through Boston College to his term with the Patriots.

When you combine that foundation with a sharp intellect, it becomes a winning combination, the kind that leads to a 37-year-old head coach.

Career

In 2004, Flores joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant when they won their third Super Bowl championship in Super Bowl XXXIX. He began his career as a pro scout in 2006 before transitioning to the coaching staff as a special team coaching assistant in 2008.

He was elevated to assistant coach offense/special teams in 2010. Subsequently, he was promoted to defensive assistant in 2011 and designated as the safeties’ coach in 2012. Before the 2016 season, he was appointed as linebackers coach.

From 2008 to 2018, he served as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots. Flores was the defensive play caller for New England during his final season as head coach, which culminated in a Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl LIII.

The Patriots secured 4 Super Bowl victories, fourteen AFC East crowns, and seven AFC Championships during his tenure with the team. He is the second former Bill Belichick assistant to be hired as head coach of the Dolphins, following Nick Saban.

He coached the Miami Dolphins from 2019 to 2021 following a Super Bowl triumph. Alongside Ron Rivera, Tom Fears, and Tom Flores, he became the fourth Latino head coach in NFL history.

Flores attempted to guide Miami to back-to-back winning seasons in 2020 and 2021, marking the team’s first consecutive wins since 2001, although they did not qualify for the playoffs.

Regrettably, following a dispute with Dolphins management, Brian Flores was dismissed after the 2021 season.

The Dolphins terminated Flores after three seasons on January 10, 2022, in a surprising move disregarding the fact that Flores’ contract had two more years remaining.

Following his dismissal, he filed a collective lawsuit against the NFL and three of its teams on Tuesday, citing racial discrimination.

He alleged racial discrimination in the league’s treatment of minority coaches and executives. Amidst the legal proceedings, he signed with the Steelers.

In his complaint, Flores asserted that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross paid him $100,000 for each loss in 2019 as part of a plan to deliberately perform poorly for a top draft pick.

Flores also claimed that the Giants only interviewed him for their head-coaching position in January to comply with the Rooney Rule, and a similar scenario transpired with the Broncos in 2019.

As per the lawsuit, the NFL and its teams are also accused of violating federal and state laws in New York and New Jersey.

To counter Flores’ allegations, the NFL has assembled a legal team that includes retired US Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

On February 19, 2022, Flores was appointed as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach.

The Pittsburgh Steelers recruited the former Miami Dolphins coach on Saturday to serve as a senior defensive assistant.

Flores will focus on coaching Pittsburgh’s linebackers, which include NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt.

Flores stated on NPR’s The Limits with Jay Williams earlier this month that he considers the lawsuit as a necessary step. He commented,

“This isn’t about me. This is about something bigger than me, which is a flawed system in the NFL regarding the hiring practices for Black and minority coaches and minorities in general.”

Flores disclosed that he learned about the Giants’ decision to choose a different coach through text conversations with Belichick, even before he had completed his final interview for the position.

“Interviews were taking place for Black and minority individuals, where we were not given a genuine opportunity to showcase our abilities in those interviews,” added Flores. “Walking into an interview where a decision had already been made was the tipping point for me.”

Brian Flores’ Family

Brian Flores’ wife, Jennifer Maria Duncan Flores, is the mother of three children. She prefers to maintain privacy and concentrate on her children.

In 2008, Flores tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Maria Duncan Flores, in an intimate ceremony. They welcomed their first daughter and two sons. However, the names of the children remain undisclosed.

Net Worth

It is estimated that Brian Flores’ net worth is $5 million. His coaching career has accelerated due to his NFL achievements.
