The Background of Initiating an Amber Alert

In 1996, Amber Hagerman’s kidnapping and murder shocked the nation.

Subsequently, a concerned citizen suggested a program to broadcast alerts about abducted children on radio stations.

Dallas radio stations embraced the concept, resulting in the establishment of the Amber Alert system.

Named after Amber Hagerman, the system aims to safeguard abducted children nationwide.

It was introduced in Ohio in 2003 and has since expanded across the nation.

Law enforcement, the media, and the public collaborate under the Amber Alert to exchange information and locate missing children as soon as possible.

With approximately 262,100 children abducted annually, the Amber Alert continues to be a crucial tool.
