Frank Lloyd Wright

A native of Wisconsin, Wright revolutionized 20th-century architecture, with his Midwestern upbringing profoundly shaping his aesthetic sensibilities.

Prior to pursuing architecture, Wright apprenticed with several architects in Chicago. His early work embodied Sullivan’s principle, “Form follows function.” Notably, Wright’s residence in Oak Park is lauded as his inaugural masterpiece. There, he pioneered his innovative “Organic Architecture” style with the Winslow House in River Forest, characterized by expansive interiors, accentuated horizontality, and a sense of openness.

His most iconic creation, Falling Water, features stacked rectangular balconies that seemingly hover over a natural waterfall integrated within the house. Subsequently, Wright incorporated curvilinear elements, culminating in the renowned Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

With over 1100 buildings to his credit, Wright encapsulated his ethos with the following quote:

Antoni Gaudí

Gaudí devoted his entire career to Barcelona, giving life to his projects in the city. The most iconic among them remains the 1883 cathedral, La Sagrada Família, an ongoing marvel of construction. His architectural style seamlessly blended Baroque, Gothic, Moorish, and Victorian elements. Gaudí’s work is characterized by a diverse array of forms, textures, and polychrome, unified by an eloquent and liberated approach to amalgamating these components.

He possessed a distinctive ability to integrate intricate geometries and architectural structures, resulting in buildings that exuded the organic essence of nature’s laws. Notable creations include Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà, inspired by the multi-peaked Montserrat mountain near Barcelona. Gaudí’s oeuvre exerted a profound influence on subsequent generations of modernists.

Philip Johnson

Johnson’s pivotal role as the founding director of MoMA’s Department of Architecture profoundly influenced the field, establishing him as a vanguard shaping architectural trends from 1935 onward. Despite being a consummate designer in his own right, Johnson’s legacy lies in refining, rather than innovating, others’ concepts. Nevertheless, he achieved iconic status with several works, notably his self-designed residence in 1949. Renowned for the Glass House in New Canaan, CT, Johnson ardently championed the International Style and played a crucial role in defining postmodernist architecture. The Glass House blurred the boundaries between interior and exterior, public and private realms, and greatly influenced today’s luxury high-rise developments due to its extensive use of plate glass. Johnson further propelled the postmodern movement with his “Chippendale” building for AT&T, featuring a broken-pediment crown reminiscent of an 18th-century high-boy.

Frank Gehry

Frank Owen Gehry, a Canadian-born Jewish architect now based in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles, reshaped domestic architecture by transforming mundane elements such as chain link fencing, corrugated aluminum, and unfinished plywood into vibrant and whimsical features of residences.

His crowning achievements, the Vitra furniture factory in Basel, Switzerland, and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil-am-Rhein, Germany, propelled him into the upper echelons of world-renowned architects by the mid-80s. Uniquely characterized by wit and playfulness, Gehry introduced a new style, “Deconstructivism,” deftly reshaping simple geometric shapes into extraordinary forms with unparalleled complexity.
