Kim Dorsey Murder: Unfolding The Grisly Details Of The Homicide

The chilling and horrific details of Kim Dorsey’s murder will remain etched in the minds of those who closely followed her case.

Even though it’s been over ten years, people still can’t seem to shake these haunting memories.

Kim’s husband, Derrick Dorsey, took it upon himself to tirelessly pursue justice for his deceased wife.

Three years after Kim’s brutal murder, justice was served, and Lance Eugene Kirkpatrick was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole by the State of Florida.

The decision, made by Judge Mark Hulsey, was based on the jury’s recommendation to convict Kirkpatrick but not to impose the death penalty.

“You should lose your liberty, but not your life,” Hulsey told Kirkpatrick when delivering the sentence.

The episode “In Cold Blood” on Dateline NBC delved into the grim details of Kim Dorsey’s murder.

The episode, hosted by Andrea Canning, features interviews with the victim’s husband and the lead detective to provide a realistic account of the crime.

In addition, “In Cold Blood” explores Kim’s life before her tragic murder and the events leading up to the heinous crime.

Derrick Dorsey expressed that seeing the story of his wife’s murder unfold on national television was surreal.

It provides a comprehensive account of one of America’s most heinous murders.

Kim’s case was so captivating that it was also covered by Investigation Discovery in an episode titled “In Plain Sight.”

Although Kim is no longer with us and her assailant has been duly punished, let us delve once again into the details of the Kim Dorsey murder case.

What transpired with Kim Dorsey?

Prior to her tragic demise, Kim led a normal life with her husband, Derrick Dorsey, and their three children: Dexter, Gracie, and Duncan, in Jacksonville, Florida.

Derrick worked as a firefighter, while Kim owned her own construction business and served as the Director of Training for the Quality Assurance Department of Inspection Depot.

Described in her obituary as a kind, compassionate, and caring woman, Kim’s untimely and horrific death deeply affected those who knew her.

Kim Dorsey’s assailant ended her life in her own bedroom. Before her murder, Kirkpatrick brutally assaulted her with a pool cue, committed a heinous act upon her, then bound her with zip ties before fatally slashing her throat with a kitchen knife.

On October 28th, 2012, Derrick discovered his wife’s lifeless body upon returning home from a 24-hour shift.

Kim’s lifeless body lay on the bedroom floor, a sight that shattered his world upon discovery.

Derrick’s anguish was compounded further when he learned that the perpetrator was someone well-acquainted with him and his late wife.

This perpetrator was no stranger – Kirkpatrick, Kim’s abuser and murderer, had worked for Derrick’s construction business and had even lived in the Dorsey family’s home for a brief period as he got back on his feet.

During the trial of Kim Dorsey’s murder case, Derrick emphasized that Kirkpatrick was someone he had trusted, treated like family, and even shared Thanksgiving dinners with for three consecutive years.

Blindsided by the arrest of Kirkpatrick, Derrick had never suspected him to be the perpetrator.

At one point in the investigation, Derrick mentioned that Kirkpatrick, also known as LJ, would have sacrificed himself for Kim.

Regrettably, Derrick’s world came crashing down when the truth about Kim Dorsey’s murder came to light.

Authorities arrested Lance Eugene Kirkpatrick after finding his DNA inside the victim’s body.

Surprisingly, the perpetrator admitted to killing Kim but claimed it was accidental.

His legal representatives argued that he broke into the house with the intention of stealing to settle a drug debt and killed Dorsey when she discovered him.

Despite the prosecution’s efforts, the jury did not accept this as Kim’s cause of death.

During the trial, Derrick Dorsey confessed to infidelity and implicated Kirkpatrick in setting him up with multiple women.

Lance Eugene Kirkpatrick asserted that he had an affair with the deceased Kim Dorsey, and the altercation that led to her death began when Kim discovered his role in helping Derrick Dorsey meet and engage with other women.

Prosecutors rejected the notion of a consensual relationship between the perpetrator and the victim.

Despite these claims, the jury found Kirkpatrick guilty of robbing the Dorsey family’s home. Subsequently, Judge Hulsey imposed three separate life sentences on the defendant for murder, assault, and burglary.

Where is Derrick Dorsey now?

Dorsey still resides in the residence where his beloved wife was tragically murdered. He personally demolished and reconstructed the bedroom in which his wife’s lifeless body was discovered to rid it of all traces of the horrific event.

Unfortunately, the house is still known as the ‘murder house’ even after many years due to the tragic events that occurred there.

Because Kirkpatrick resided in the same house where he committed the murder, Derrick, Kim’s husband, still receives mail addressed to him, serving as a reminder of the traumatic events that unfolded.

Since then, Derrick Dorsey has retired from Jacksonville Fire and Rescue and now oversees New Hope Family Services alongside his new spouse.

They provide mental health services, including grief counseling and therapy. He believes it is his duty to assist others going through similar tragedies.

“Mental health is undervalued and stigmatized. I have no qualms about sharing my story and urging others not to face it alone because you’re only fooling yourself,” he said.
