Pelayo Novo Death – How Did He End Up On A Railway Track?

The former Spanish footballer Pelayo Novo’s life was claimed by a train on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, in the La Corredoria neighborhood in Oviedo

Following an accident in 2018, where he fell from a hotel’s third floor, Novo retired and was left wheelchair-bound. 

Subsequently, he left the world of professional soccer behind and embraced wheelchair tennis after surviving a hotel fall in 2018.

Pelayo Novo’s untimely death has prompted an outpouring of grief from Spanish football aficionados. 

This tragic turn of events transpired shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday near La Malata park in Asturian. Pelayo was struck by a train from Oviedo to Siero on the Renfe line.

Asturias received an emergency call around 7:55 p.m., prompting the (SAMU) Urgent Medical Care Service and the National Police to rush to the accident site, where they discovered Novo deceased.

The former footballer, who competed in more than 200 matches for Spanish football clubs such as Real Oviedo, Lugo, Cluj, Córdoba, Elche, and Albacete between 2012 and 2018, tied the knot with his partner, Iciar López, only eight months ago.

The Real Oviedo club posted on its Twitter account, “With a broken heart. We deeply regret the death of Pelayo Novo, captain of our Foundation. Family, friends: we are with you. Rest in peace Pelayo,”

Albacete tweeted, “In a short time, you managed to win the affection of a whole hobby that now mourns your terrible loss. Family and friends, you have our full support and affection. Rest in peace, Pelayo.”

Did Pelayo Novo Succumb to Tragic Fate Due to Depression?

On March 3, 2018, at the age of 27, Pelayo narrowly escaped death. 

Pelayo survived the fall from an internal patio of the Abba hotel in Huesca, where he was concentrated as part of the Albacete squad.

The Spanish footballer was hospitalized for 51 days at the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital in Zaragoza, the largest city in the region, and underwent several surgeries.

Irreversible spinal cord injuries left him reliant on crutches indefinitely, prompting his retirement from football after 208 official matches and 26 goals between 2012 and 2018. 

However, instead of succumbing to frustration and abandoning the sport, he took on wheelchair tennis.

Furthermore, he established himself as a prominent fixture in the Spanish national men’s wheelchair tennis rankings. 

He even sat on the board of directors of the Asturian Tennis Federation and became a brand ambassador for the Real Oviedo Foundation.

However, some Spanish sources suggested that, despite his successful transition to wheelchair tennis, he continued to battle severe depression stemming from his football career. 

The cause of the incident that claimed his life has yet to be determined, but fans speculate that his depression may have contributed to his tragic demise.
