Who Was Ray Guy?

Ray Guy was the standout of the University of Southern Mississippi, where he competed for the Oakland Railers.

While engaged in football, he became the inaugural punter to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 

Regrettably, he passed away on November 3, 2022, yet the cause of his demise remains undisclosed.

It was, however, reported that he was grappling with a prolonged sickness while under the care of a Hattiesburg-area hospice.

In 1973, he was chosen as the 23rd overall pick by the Raiders and subsequently retired from the team in 1987 after a career record of 619 punts. 

It took thirty years for him to be chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, becoming the initial player to be inducted for his punting. 

Seven times, he was a candidate for induction, commencing in 1992. Initially, he did not garner many votes or gain entry on subsequent occasions. 

Before his induction in 2014, Ray expressed that these were the instances that troubled him the most. People used to tell him that this was not a position typically recognized by athletes, “it’s inconsequential.”

He additionally stated, “That’s what truly irked me. It wasn’t so much whether I did or didn’t. I just wished someone had. It was simply knowing that they were indifferent.”

He concluded, “That’s what somewhat aggravated me.”

He was inducted into the National High School Sports Hall Of Fame and the College Football Hall Of Fame.

In 2011, Ray encountered a shock when he and his spouse, Beverly, filed for insolvency. In order to settle his debts, Ray had to part with his Super Bowl rings. 

Later, his union also dissolved in divorce. The pair shared two children, indicating that Ray Guy had two offspring, whom he left behind after his passing.
