Sara Eisen, A Prominent Name in Television Journalism

Sara Aliza Eisen is an American television journalist currently linked with CNBC. She works as the co-host of the channel’s programs ‘Squawk on the Street’ and ‘Closing Bell.’ A native of Ohio, she wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the markets and currencies during her college years.

While studying at New York University, she completed an internship with a startup website called ForexTV.com. It was there that she gained her initial exposure to business news. Sara Eisen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, to pediatric dentist Dr. Jane Eisen and dermatologist Dr. Drore Eisen. Various sources provide conflicting information about her birth date. Some online sources claim that she was born on August 7, 1984, while others state that her birth occurred in 1985. A few websites even indicate that it took place on December 9, 1970, or August 7, 1970. According to a ‘New York Times article on her wedding published on May 29, 2016, those are clearly incorrect; she was 31 years old at the time.

After completing high school, Sara Eisen enrolled at New York University to study televised reporting and business coverage, and obtained her bachelor’s degree from there. During her time at NYU, she secured an internship with a startup website called ForexTV.com

Sara Eisen commenced her career in business journalism through an internship in broadcasting at a startup website named ForexTV.com during her undergraduate studies. ForexTv.com was a site dedicated to covering the foreign exchange market and currencies. It was here that she developed a passion for Forex.

After completing her undergraduate studies, Sara Eisen pursued further education in business journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. During her time at the school, she undertook an internship at Bloomberg Television in Hong Kong. In this role, she was involved in behind-the-scenes production, writing and editing packages, and general production assistant work. She was based in Hong Kong for about four months and had the opportunity to travel around the region. She also visited the Philippines, where she reported on stories such as the 2008 global rice crisis.

Upon graduation, Sara Eisen relocated to New York City to join Bloomberg TV full time as a production assistant in 2008, during the midst of the Great Recession. At this time, she frequently contributed to stories about the US dollar, which was gaining momentum. While working as a production assistant, she also began covering currencies for Bloomberg Radio, where she would provide a daily one-minute currency update. Following her success on Bloomberg Radio, she started to cover currencies on Bloomberg TV.

Sara Eisen later co-hosted Bloomberg Surveillance alongside Tom Keene. During this time, she started covering more international stories, including the European debt crisis, conducting interviews with prominent political leaders and finance ministers. She also reported from the ground in Japan on the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

Sara Eisen joined CNBC in December 2013 as a correspondent focusing on global consumer news. She is a co-host of the 10 AM ET hour of CNBC’s Squawk on the Street (M-F, 9 AM-11 AM ET), broadcast from Post 9 at the New York Stock Exchange. Additionally, Sara is a co-host of Closing Bell.

In January 2016, Eisen was appointed co-host of CNBC’s Worldwide Exchange (M-F, 5 AM-6 AM ET), broadcast from CNBC Global Headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. CNBC anchors typically receive salaries of $600,000-$700,000 annually, according to Glassdoor.

On June 22, 2020, Eisen began exclusively hosting Closing Bell alongside Wilfred Frost, as per a memo from Dan Colarusso, senior vice president of CNBC Business News. “We want Sara to have the ability to focus on a part of the day that, while always crucial, has become even more critical to our audience in these volatile times,” he said.

Philanthropic Endeavors

Sara Eisen supports the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an organization that educates about the Holocaust, addresses anti-semitism, and combats all forms of hate. She was inspired to join the organization by her grandparents, who were both survivors of the Holocaust. Sara Eisen is married to Matthew Levine, a managing editor at Bloomberg Television. The family resides in New York City and has two children together.

Eisen crossed paths with fellow journalist Matthew Stone Levine in 2011. At the time, they were both employed at Bloomberg TV. In due course, a relationship began to flourish between the two. After dating for four years, the couple announced their engagement in 2015. On May 29, 2016, they tied the knot in a Jewish ceremony at Weylin B. Seymour’s event space and historic site in Brooklyn, New York. Levine previously held the position of head of US programming at Bloomberg TV. In March 2019, he joined Brunswick Group as a director.
