Mitchell McConnell Jr. came into this world on February 20th, 1942, in Tuscumbia, Alabama, U.S. The well-known politician turned 81 years old in 2023.
The senator worked as an attorney before entering into politics. His initial triumph came in 1985 after becoming the senior United States senator from Kentucky, and he has since held this position.
McConnell is a proud representative of the Republican Party. He served as majority whip from 2003–2007, as a minority leader from 2007–2015, and as majority leader from 2015–2021.
Recently, McConnell made it to the news after stumbling at a Washington Hotel on Wednesday, March 8th, 2023.
The senator from Kentucky, 81, was attending a private dinner when he tripped and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to his spokesman, the senator has suffered a concussion and will likely remain hospitalized for several days.
Spokesman David Popp said Thursday, “The Leader is thankful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.”
The senator is expected to recover fully and return to the Senate soon. Many people have sent the senator best wishes and hope to see him back in shape.
Not many people know this, but the popular senator was afflicted with polio during his early childhood. Fortunately, he recovered from it completely and has been living a normal life since his recovery.
McConnell graduated from the University of Louisville in 1964 and the University of Kentucky Law School in 1967.
His advocacy career included being a legislative assistant to U.S. Sen. Marlow Cook. He later served as deputy assistant U.S. attorney general in the administration of Pres. Gerald R. Ford (1974–75) and as judge/executive (chief judge) of Jefferson county, Kentucky (1978–85).
Mitchell got married to Sherrill Redmon in 1968, but the couple parted ways amicably in 1980. McConnell and Redmon are parents to three children.
The senator tried his luck at love the second time when he got married to Elaine Chao in 1993. Chao served as secretary of labor under Pres. George W. Bush and secretary of transportation under Pres. Donald Trump.

McConnell’s victory in 1984 made him the first Republican since 1968 to win a statewide election in Kentucky.
McConnell earned a reputation as a tough opponent of campaign finance reform and campaign spending limits.
From the 1990s, he consistently voted against a series of such measures, including some sponsored by fellow Republicans.
Back in 2007, as the newly elected Senate minority leader, McConnell opposed Democratic calls to set a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, arguing that it was not within the power of Congress to make such a judgment.
Over the next several years, McConnell helped block several Democrat-led initiatives, including gun-control measures and increases to the minimum wage.
Despite some criticism of his party’s use of the filibuster, he argued that Democrats refused to negotiate. After the Republicans regained control of the Senate in the 2014 midterm elections, McConnell was named majority leader.
In 2016 McConnell caused controversy when he refused to bring Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, to a vote in the Senate. McConnell claimed that the vacancy should remain open until a new president was inaugurated because it was an election year.
During the 2016 presidential race, he supported the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, who eventually became the President.
