Upon arriving at the scene, it appeared as though Ryan was the perpetrator. Instead of rushing him to the hospital, the police commenced questioning him as they suspected Ryan had murdered his girlfriend, Heather Quan.  

Ryan alleged that intruders had entered their residence and shot both him and Heather. He claimed that the intruders presumed the couple was deceased, hence they fled, but he managed to survive the gunshot wound. 

Initially, the police doubted Ryan’s account due to the incredulity surrounding his survival from the head injury, but eventually, they found his statement credible.

The severe injuries Ryan sustained during the incident proved fatal. When the intruders fired at his head, the bullet fragmented a portion of Waller’s skull and pierced his sinus, bone, and brain.

Ryan and Heather resided together in a leased apartment with a roommate named Alexia.

On December 23, 2006, Ryan and his partner were alone at home when Ritchie Carver and his father, Larry Carver, came to their residence. 

They rang the doorbell but then forcefully entered the premises. Waller attempted to shut the door, but Richie thrust his arm in and shot Ryan twice in the head, presuming him to be deceased. 

Subsequently, the father-son duo shot Heather while she was seated on the couch in another room, resulting in her demise. They eliminated his girlfriend to eliminate any potential witnesses.
