How Did Cain Velasquez Start His Career?

Velasquez, born in 1982 in Salinas, California, originally aspired to be a boxer, but because his family was too impoverished to afford a pair of gloves and boxing lessons, he pursued wrestling instead.

During his senior year in Kofa High School, he was captain of the wrestling and football teams. He wrestled for Iowa Central Community College and Arizona State University during his college days.

Velasquez, the first major Mexican-American heavyweight champion in MMA history, made his MMA debut in October 2006.

Over the years, the two-time UFC heavyweight champion conquered Jeremiah Constant, Brad Morris, and Jake O’Brien. He also emerged victorious in the first round against Denis Stojnic, Cheick Kongo, Ben Rothwell, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

After defeating Nogueira, Velasquez got an opportunity to fight for the UFC Heavyweight Championship against reigning champ Brock Lesnar. He managed to defeat Lesnar in the first round with a technical knockout (TKO), but Velasquez also tore his rotator cuff in that match and had to undergo surgery.

Velasquez later returned to the octagon in late 2011 after he recovered from his injury, defeating Antonio Silva and defending his heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos.

The years from 2015 to 2019 reportedly saw the decline of the career of Velasquez, who lost to Fabricio Werdum and Francis Ngannou. Despite his loss, he reportedly earned $450,000 for his fight against Ngannou. 

In 2019, Velasquez announced his retirement from MMA. In that same year, he joined WWE. He made his debut on October 4, 2019, on the first episode of the 20th season of Fox’s “SmackDown.” 

In April 2020, WWE released Velasquez from his contract after six months and just two matches. His release was part of WWE’s staffing cuts to deal with the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cain Velasquez Arrest

Velasquez made headlines earlier this week after he was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into Santa Clara County jail in California.

San Jose Police Department said Velasquez allegedly shot a man whose name has not been disclosed, at least once near Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue in San Jose. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Multiple news sites have reported that Velasquez may have been shooting at a man he believed had molested a child closely related to the ex-MMA fighter.

Velasquez is being held without bail, according to ESPN, citing online records He has a court date set for Wednesday.

He married his girlfriend Michelle on May 28, 2011, and their daughter Coral Love Velasquez was born on May 6, 2009. 

Their son was born in 2018. Velasquez speaks English and Spanish fluently. He has been a guest star on Spanish-language television networks as Telemundo and Univision. He also appeared as a featured guest on “Lopez Tonight.” Velasquez also appeared in the music video “Te Siento” for Wisin & Yandel.

In the early days of his professional fighting career, Cain trained at a facility in California far from his home. 

He worked as a bouncer at a club near his training center and frequently slept in his car rather than making the long drive back to Yuma, Arizona, each night. He told his mom he was staying with a friend.

Velasquez enters the ring to the song “Los Mandados,” which tells the story of a Mexican immigrant who tried to cross the border into the U.S. His father, Efrain made six trips to get into the U.S. and was deported all six times. On Efrain’s seventh trip to the U.S., he met his future wife Isabel.
