The new Netflix series, “Monster – The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has been a trending topic on social media. The series features Evan Peters portraying the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and his interactions with his 17 victims.

In subsequent episodes, viewers witness the brutal murders of 17 victims ranging from 14 to 33 years old. The victims predominantly consisted of men and boys, many of whom were Black.

Between 1978 and 1991, people experienced immense insecurity as the infamous serial killer remained off the police’s radar. Following the series’ release, “Monster” garnered a substantial following.

While the show received attention on social media, it also garnered headlines on news channels. The families of the victims criticized the show for revisiting the traumatizing events that had affected their families.

On numerous occasions, family members of the victims were not consulted regarding the portrayal of their loved ones’ characters in the series.

Who was Jesse Jackson, Sr.?

Jesse Jackson, Sr. was born on October 8, 1941. He is recognized as an American political activist, Baptist minister, and politician.

In 1984, he made history as the second Black presidential candidate. According to History.com, Jesse won five primaries and caucuses, amassing over 3 million votes.

He was raised in Greenville, South Carolina, and his parents were Noah Louise Robbinson, a professional boxer, and Helen Burns. After Jesse’s birth, his mother married another individual named Charles Henry Jackson.

Jesse, originally named by his stepfather, was a post office maintenance worker who adopted him. Jackson had been given the name Jesse by his stepfather. Growing up, he developed strong relationships with both his biological father, Robinson, and his stepfather, and held both of them in high regard.

Why Did Reverend Jesse Jackson Visit Milwaukee?

Following Jeffrey’s arrest, Jesse traveled to Milwaukee to closely examine the investigation into Dahmer’s trails. He also observed the prevalent biases the police harbored against Black and White citizens.

After Dahmer’s arrest on July 22, 1991, Jackson visited Milwaukee to engage with the local Black community and address the negligence of police officials. His objective was to ascertain whether the police’s failure resulted from racial complexities and racism.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone, who had been abducted by Dahmer, was not rescued by the police. It was documented that Konerak had managed to escape from Jeffrey’s apartment and directly approached the police.

However, the police disregarded his statements and returned Konerak to Dahmer’s apartment. Dahmer informed the police that Konertak was his 19-year-old boyfriend. Despite Dahmer’s neighbors reporting suspicious activities related to the murders, the police paid no attention.

Whom Did Reverend Jesse Jackson Meet During His Visit to Milwaukee?

During his visit, Jesse met with Mayor John O. Norquist and discussed that despite Police Chief Philip Arreola and his department’s involvement in Dahmer’s arrest, he was not in a position to pass judgment.

He also highlighted that neighbors had reported Dahmer’s activities, but the police did not pay much attention to them because the neighbors belonged to the Black community. He also initiated a movement against racism, which drew the participation of 1,000 citizens.
